What makes a swimsuit actually work for scuba diving?
A cute swimsuit and a dive-ready swimsuit are not always the same thing. After years of living on a sailboat and diving in warm water, I look for pieces that stay put during a giant stride, lie flat under a wetsuit or BCD, protect skin during surface intervals, and remain comfortable through multiple dives.
This guide includes secure one-pieces, long-sleeve sun suits, full-body dive skins, spring suits and a few supportive separates. Some are best worn alone in tropical water; others are better as a smooth base layer beneath exposure protection.

Scuba swimsuit features that matter
- Secure coverage: Choose straps, necklines and bottoms that stay in place while gearing up, entering the water and removing a wetsuit.
- Low-profile seams: Hardware, knots, ruffles and thick ties can create pressure points beneath a BCD or wetsuit.
- Sun protection: Long sleeves and verified UPF fabric help during boat rides and surface intervals, but exposed skin still needs protection.
- Warmth: A Lycra sun suit adds coverage but very little insulation. Choose neoprene or another thermal layer when water temperature requires it.
- Corrosion protection: I’ve lost so many great swimsuits once the metal clips, zippers, or strap adjusters corroded into dust. Look for plastic pieces, or suits with no additional hardware at all.

My final take on scuba diving swimsuits
For tropical diving, my favorite setup is a secure one-piece or long-sleeve sun suit that stays flat under my BCD and protects my shoulders during the boat ride. If I am wearing a wetsuit, I avoid bulky ties, metal hardware and thick seams that become uncomfortable once everything is cinched down.
Choose coverage and function first. The best scuba swimsuit is the one you do not need to adjust at the surface, on the ladder or underwater.
