Why I almost always dive in leggings

They add sun protection on the dinghy ride, take the sting out of brushing against a jellyfish tentacle, reduce rubbing under rental gear, and give me just enough coverage when I do not want a full wetsuit.

Test that the fabric is not transparent when wet and remember that ordinary activewear usually does not provide verified UPF protection—but it is a practical way to reuse something you already own.

What to look for before buying swim or scuba leggings
Warmth: Lightweight polyester or nylon leggings offer coverage but almost no meaningful insulation. For cooler water, choose neoprene and match its thickness to the conditions and the rest of your exposure protection.
UPF: Look for a tested UPF rating rather than assuming every dark fabric provides the same protection. Remember that leggings only protect the skin they cover.
Waistband: A wide, secure waistband is less likely to roll under a BCD or slide during a giant stride. Drawstrings can help, but bulky hardware may become uncomfortable under gear.
Fit: Loose fabric creates drag and can bunch under a wetsuit. Extremely tight leggings may become sheer or restrict movement. Check the brand’s measurements instead of relying only on your usual size.
Pockets: Excellent on land, but not necessarily useful underwater. Never place a phone or unsecured valuables in them before a dive.
Durability: Pool chlorine, rough docks, Velcro, and textured boat decks are hard on lightweight fabric. Rinse leggings in fresh water and keep them away from hook-and-loop closures.
My final take
For warm tropical dives, I prefer lightweight, high-waisted leggings that dry quickly and stay comfortable through the dinghy ride, dive, and walk back to the boat. If I expect cooler water or repeated long dives, I move to neoprene rather than pretending thin swim fabric will keep me warm.
Choose the pair that matches your conditions first and your favorite print second. The right leggings should protect your skin, move easily, and stay in place without becoming another piece of gear you have to fuss with.
